Many of these exist as their own projects, supported by Protocol Labs. Learn more about them below. ### Libp2p A modular network stack, libp2p enables you to run your network applications free from runtime and address services, independently of their location. Learn more at [libp2p.io/](http://libp2p.io/). ### IPLD IPLD is the data model of the content-addressable web. It allows us to treat all hash-linked data structures as subsets of a unified information space, unifying all data models that link data with hashes as instances of IPLD. Learn more at [ipld.io/](https://ipld.io/). ### IPFS IPFS is a distributed system for storing and accessing files, websites, applications, and data. However, it does not have support for incentivization or guarantees of this distributed storage; Filecoin provides the incentive layer. Learn more at [ipfs.tech/](https://ipfs.tech/). ### Multiformats The Multiformats Project is a collection of protocols which aim to future-proof systems through self-describing format values that allow for interoperability and protocol agility. Learn more at [multiformats.io/](https://multiformats.io/). ### ProtoSchool Interactive tutorials on decentralized web protocols, designed to introduce you to decentralized web concepts, protocols, and tools. Filecoin is a peer-to-peer network that stores files, with built-in economic incentives and cryptography to ensure files are stored reliably over time. In Filecoin, users pay to store their files on storage providers. Storage providers are computers responsible for storing files and proving they have stored them correctly over time. Anyone who wants to store their files or get paid for storing other users’ files can join Filecoin. Available storage, and the price of that storage, are not controlled by any single company. Instead, Filecoin facilitates open markets for storing and retrieving files that anyone can participate in. Filecoin is built on top of the same software powering IPFS protocol, which is a peer-to-peer distributed storage network that leverages content addressing to allow permanent references to the data, and avoids relying on specific devices or cloud servers for addressing the content.

IPFS is a modular suite of protocols for organizing and transferring data, designed from the ground up with the principles of content addressing and peer-to-peer networking. Because IPFS is open-source, there are multiple implementations of IPFS. While IPFS has more than one use case, its main use case is for publishing data (files, directories, websites, etc.) in a decentralized fashion. 1

libp2p, (short for “library peer-to-peer”) is a peer-to-peer (P2P) networking framework that enables the development of P2P applications. It consists of a collection of protocols, specifications, and libraries that facilitate P2P communication between network participants, known as “peers.” ibp2p was initially developed as part of the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) project as its wire protocol but has since phased out into a networking stack that has been adopted by a wide range of other projects as a networking layer. It provides a set of specifications that can be adapted to support various protocols, allowing libp2p applications to operate in diverse runtimes and networking environments.
